Ever find yourself humming a tune you’ve come up with but don’t know how to make it into a song?

Have lyrics but you aren’t sure how to build a tune around them?

Come spend the day with musician Michael George and learn the basics of songwriting!

Sponsored by the Centre for Creative Learning, this one-day course will concentrate on the process of songwriting. By the end of the day, the class will have written a song together, complete with music and lyrics.

The focus will be on writing a genuine, meaningful song that keeps the listener interested, with a universal theme so it would (at least theoretically) have a chance of getting airplay. Musical or lyrical problems encountered during the writing will be discussed and resolved.

The class members will be involved every step of the way, offering suggestions for both the musical and lyrical theme, intro, verses, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, and outro. Song structure, originality, key words/ideas, wordplay, genuine emotion being put into words (as opposed to clever lines), songwriting rules, breaking songwriting rules, evoking universal emotions and/or memories etc through the use of lyrics, the use of hooks in both the music and lyrics, the marriage of lyrics and music…all of these points and more will be covered and used where appropriate in the writing of the song.

As well, where to find ideas/inspiration and writers block will be discussed.

[Westport Centre for Creative Learning] is not merely a portal by which to get away from all the forces that drain the spirit, but a means to arrive at something essential, something real in one’s own creative process.  CCL nourishes body and soul—like its pond stirred up by a gentle waterfall, time spent there is both tranquil and moving.

It was a wonderful literary weekend writers’ workshop program at the Centre for Creative Learning that left everyone milling about the parked cars not wanting to leave CCL, not wanting to say their goodbyes, nor end the powerful magic of a perfect time devoted to craft and meaning.
